Targeted Science

Scientific Advisory Committee

The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) plays an integral role at MDSS. It expands, by extraordinary proportions, the company’s bench strength in medical/scientific specialties. The members of the SAC support a range of activities. These include helping to develop and review products as well as create educational programs. The SAC also fine tunes product specifications and performance standards.

Who is on the SAC? The roster includes: dermatologists, dermatologic oncologists and surgeons, medical and surgical oncologists, plastic surgeons, pediatric and adolescent medical specialists, internal medicine physician, ophthalmologists and ophthalmologic oncologists, behavioral and environmental scientists, and photobiologists and chemists with specialties in photobiology and photochemistry.

UVA and UVB  protection

Traditionally, sunscreens have protected against UVB (an easy way to think of them as are Ultraviolet “Burning”) rays. These were the rays thought most responsible for causing skin to burn. In the past, UVB was considered the only UVR (Ultraviolet Radiation) that would lead to skin cancer. Recent studies have shown that UVA (think Ultraviolet “Aging”) rays also can significantly contribute to carcinogenesis, as well as photoaging and other undesirable effects. There is now consensus that sunscreens should include broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Most commercially available sunscreens in the U.S. provide substantial UVB coverage; UVA coverage has been more variable.

State-of-the-Science: Skin Safe and Environmentally-friendly

MDSS sunscreens are unparalleled. Why? They provide high levels of sun protection, delivered as safely as we could craft -- for both the users and the environment.

To develop its products, the team enlisted the support of leading medical professionals, researchers and manufacturers. This collaborative effort yielded state-of-the-science sunscreen products, which are both safer for the skin and environmentally friendly.

The company also developed a unique photostabilizer for the product which contains an organic sunscreen. This stabilizer allowed us to use what we consider the safest and least controversial of the organic sunscreens and allowed us to truly claim that all of our products were crafted to be safer for the user and the environment

MDSS seeks  to be as environmentally “green” as possible and to remain at the cutting edge of science. For example, a recent scientific article that implicated some sunscreen chemicals in the bleaching of coral reefs prompted the scientists at MDSS to re-evaluate and modify formulas to create a product that eliminates those reported chemicals tthought to cause damage to coral and coral reefs.

State-of-the-Art: Superior Application and Feel

MDSS has pushed the limits of technology to develop formulations that offer unmatched cosmetic appeal. By doing so, the company raised the bar to provide truly transparent sunscreens with elegant emollient consistencies.

The MDSS approach to formulation has resulted in products that not only deliver high levels of broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, but are also cosmetically elegant and easy to apply. Our mineral-based sunscreens are high SPF, high PFA (broad spectrum) products with a silky, dry (yet moisturizing) feel. Our sports stick is our hybrid sunscreen. It consists of a unique mineral formulation and the safest of organics. It is non-greasy, very water resistant and intended for use on sensitive areas of the face, upper chest and neck. No-touch continuous sprays remain the fastest growing segment of the sunscreen market. The MDSS No Touch Continuous Spray, photostabilized by our proprietary SolSciX formula, delivers a high level of broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection in a light formulation. Our research indicates that our product is probably the only high-SPF no touch continuous spray on the market that does not contain oxybenzone.
